The Ultimate 1-Day Itinerary: Midnight Madness

To reach the summit by sunrise and avoid the blistering daytime heat on the way down, a one-day Rinjani trek requires a strict, military-style itinerary.

Phase 1: Pick-up to Sembalun (10:00 AM – 02:00 PM)

We will come to pick you up at your location within Lombok island and transfer to Sembalun, medical check-up, registration in Rinjani National Park offce then check-in hotel for rest and dinner.

Phase 2: The Midnight Start (11:00 PM – 12:00 AM)

Our guide will pick-up you at hotel in Sembalun then transfer to the gate of Rinjani National Park. Armed with headlamps and trekking poles, you’ll start hiking through the savanna under a blanket of stars. The initial stretch is a relatively gentle incline through Pos 1 and Pos 2.

Phase 3: The Seven Hills of Regret (1:00 AM – 2:00 AM)

After Pos 3, the real test begins. You will tackle the infamous “Bukit Penyesalan” (Hills of Regret). The terrain transitions into a steep, muddy, and dusty incline that leads up to the Sembalun Crater Rim (Plawangan Sembalun) at 2,639 meters and take short rest with some hot drink.

Phase 4: The Scree Ridge to the Summit (3:00 AM – 4:00 AM)

From the crater rim, you have roughly 2 hours to conquer the final 1.100 m of elevation. This is the hardest part of the trek. You’ll be walking on loose volcanic ash and gravel (scree)—for every two steps forward, you’ll slide one step back. The freezing wind and thinning air will test your mental grit.

Phase 5: Sunrise at 3,726m (5:00 AM – 6:00 AM)

As the sun breaks over the horizon, you will stand on the highest point of Lombok. From the summit, you are treated to an unparalleled 360-degree view: the smoking cone of Barujari Volcano inside the Segara Anak Lake, Mount Agung in Bali, and Mount Tambora in Sumbawa.

Phase 6: The Long Descent (6:00 AM – 11:30 AM)

What goes up must come down. The descent to Sembalun is fast but brutal on the knees. You will slide down the loose scree back to the crater rim for a quick breakfast, then push through the savanna back to Sembalun village.

Why Choose the 1-Day Sembalun Route?

  • Time Efficiency: Perfect for travelers with tight itineraries who want to experience Rinjani without spending nights camping on the mountain.

  • The Ultimate Bragging Right: Completing a 3-day trek in a single day is a true badge of honor for endurance athletes.

Crucial Preparation and Training Tips

Warning: This trek is absolutely not recommended for beginners, casual walkers, or anyone prone to severe altitude sickness.

To maximize your chances of a successful summit, focus on these three pillars:

  1. Cardio Endurance: Incorporate high-intensity interval training (HIIT), long-distance running, or staircase climbing into your routine for at least 4–6 weeks prior.

  2. Leg Strength: Squats, lunges, and calf raises will save your joints during the steep 2,500 m descent.

  3. Acclimatization: If possible, spend a day or two in Sembalun 1,156 m before the hike to let your body adjust to the altitude.

Essential Packing List for a Day Hike

Because you aren’t camping, you want to keep your daypack as light as possible. However, the temperature at the summit can drop to 0°C to 5°C, so layering is key.

  • Clothing: Windbreaker/waterproof jacket, thermal inner layer, lightweight hiking pants, beanie, and gloves.

  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with deep traction (essential for the scree) and high-quality trekking socks.

  • Gear: High-lumens headlamp (with spare batteries), trekking poles (non-negotiable for balance on the loose gravel), and a 20L daypack.

  • Fuel: At least 3 liters of water, electrolyte tablets, energy gels, protein bars, and a pocketful of chocolates.

Booking Your Trek: Guide and Permits
